my second-to-last day of freedom

Well, FRANKENSTORM threw off our week a little.  R didn't have classes Monday-Wednesday which was okay considering seester was visiting.  We really just caught up on sleep and baked for a day and a half while the winds whipped outside our little apartment.  There are a few trees down in the area but it seems the DC metro was absolutely spared.

Since arriving in Falls Church 8 weeks ago, I've had quite a bit of flexibility with my schedule.  After the first week of settling in, I continued to serve with Cru from a distance.  This turned out to be the perfect way to wrap up responsibilities and support those on my team in Atlanta after such a quick transition.

October 16th was my official last day working with Cru in that capacity, so I've had 2.5 weeks of pure leisure.  Well, okay, leisure might be a bit of a stretch.  We've hosted family members, celebrated a birthday & swearing-in, weathered FRANKENSTORM, and I sort of temped last week at a friend's office. It hasn't been dull.

After dropping seester at the airport Wednesday, I've been catching up on more of the details involved in getting to China with R.  There's plenty that has to wait a few weeks, but it's nice to have a game plan for the coming month or so.  It's hard to believe that in SEVEN weeks we'll be packing out of our apartment and starting the journey towards Shenyang!

Today is my edit:second-to-last day of flexibility and freedom because Monday Tuesday I start Con-Gen.  Con-Gen is the basic consular course that all FSOs take before a consular tour.  R actually started the course last Friday and I've enrolled in a different section of the same course in case I decide I'd like to apply to become a Visa Adjudicator myself.  Such fancy words in consular affairs... I'm not actually sure what all is involved in adjudicating visas, but I figured that's why you take the course to find out.
edit: Realized that all this time I was thinking Con-gen started on Monday but it actually starts November 6th which every calendar I own has corroborated is TUESDAY! yay for 2 more days of freedom!

We're planning on a low key weekend with friends here in town.  I'm taking advantage of my last two days of freedom to run more errands (I think I've visited target on a more regular basis than any other time of life).  Still in shock that it's NOVEMBER already.
